Social Media Specialist Technical Certificate of Credit

The Social Media Specialist certificate prepares graduates to create and administer content on all social media platforms to build an audience and ensure customer engagement. The specialist may also monitor site metrics, respond to reader comments, and oversee creative design.

Students may enter the Social Media Specialist certificate program any semester. A full-time student can complete this program in 2 semesters. To graduate, students must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours.

Individuals wanting to enroll in the Social Media Specialist certificate program must be able to work in an office setting, type and produce business documents, be a fast and accurate typist, show initiative, work with people, work as a team member, multi-task, display a professional appearance, work with computers and computer application software, and have a strong work ethic.

Employment Opportunities

Social media specialists communicate with the public through platforms that allow users to create and share content online. They run their employers' social media accounts, working to build a brand's reputation. These workers post content-such as images, text, or videos-to spark interest in a topic that relates to the brand as a whole. In addition, social media specialists follow conversations and interact with the public online. These workers sometimes collaborate with others to promote their employer's cause. To track the effectiveness of their communication strategies, social media specialists set goals and then measure success against those goals.

Admission Requirements

OFTC may accept a student’s official entrance score on the following validated assessment instruments if the scores meet the required minimums:

  • COMPASS/ASSET,
  • SAT,
  • ACT,
  • PSAT,
  • PACT,
  • Accuplacer/Accuplacer Next Generation/Companion,
  • HOPE GPA after completion of 10th grade of 2.6 or higher, or High School GPA of 2.6 (for occupational programs), or 2.0 for Workforce Entry Level programs, or GED.

The College may accept transfer credit for other courses according to the College’s transfer policy.
